Reducing Plastic Waste

Plastics are widespread and many plastic items don’t get recovered or recycled. Unlike metals or glass, plastics cannot be recycled infinitely. Plastics also create tiny particles – microplastics – which pollute water and the environment.

What can we do to reduce plastic waste?

  • Avoid buying products that generate non-recyclable plastics.
    • Some examples of plastics that aren’t recyclable in Greater Sudbury are:
      • Crinkly, shiny and/or non-stretchy plastic bags and packages, such as granola bar wrappers, chip bags, pet food bags, deli meat packages, pasta packages, fruit or juice pouches, and cereal or cracker bags
      • Plastics without numbers
      • Plastics #3 or #7 (this currently includes Lunchable trays)
      • Fruit and vegetable net/mesh bags
      • Cling wrap (Saran wrap)
      • Shrink wrap (including for boats)
      • Plastic disposable utensils and straws
      • Plastic gift cards
      • Plastic containers that have not been properly rinsed
  • Use reusable products rather than single-use disposables, such as washable utensils or cloths, instead of disposable alternatives like sponges or wipes.
  • Shop at bulk or refill stores with reusable containers.
  • Buy loose fruits and vegetables or try growing your own!
  • Send electronic gift vouchers instead of buying plastic gift cards.
  • Use solid shampoo, conditioner bars and soap bars.
  • Look for products made of recycled plastics.
  • Make sure you rinse containers! Not only will dirty containers (plastic or other) not get recycled, but they can contaminate other items in the Blue Box or truck, preventing more items from getting recycled.
