Outdoor Patios and Sidewalk Retail

The City of Greater Sudbury offers a streamlined application process to local businesses with plans for new or expanded restaurant patios and outdoor retail activities.

LOCATED WITHIN THE MUNICIPAL ROAD ALLOWANCE

  1.  If the patio is located within the road allowance (sidewalk, boulevard, street parking or lanes) a permit is required through a Road Occupancy Permit and the patio must meet the requirements outlined in the Sidewalk Café Zoning Bylaw 2016-5.
  2. If the patio is located downtown, contact the Downtown BIA (info@downtownsudbury.com) for further guidance and to coordinate/submit your patio requests.
  3. Miscellaneous patio request (outside the downtown) may be made through sidewalkspatios@greatersudbury.ca.

LOCATED ON PRIVATE PROPERTY

  1. If the patio is located on private property, an email should be sent for preliminary site plan review through Planning Services (planning.services@greatersudbury) The review will determine if the patio is a substantial increase to the usability of the site and whether a formal SPCA (Site Plan Control Agreement)  review is required to address parking, fire routes, landscaping, etc. Planning services will also inquire with building services about building permits and liquor license and convey this information to the applicant. 
  2. If an SPCA review is required Planning Services will require a site plan application to be provided through Pronto.
  3. If no SPCA review is required, but a building permit and/or liquor licenses is required then the owner should make an application through Pronto.   4. If only a liquor license is required, then an application can be made through Building Services (buildingservices@pronto.greatersudbury.ca)
