Cenotaphs and Monuments
Cenotaphs and Monuments
Cenotaphs and monuments are important community landmarks that honour history, commemorate service and sacrifice, and recognize significant people, events, and milestones. They provide spaces for reflection, learning, and remembrance, and help preserve the stories that shape Greater Sudbury’s identity.
The City is proud to support these sites and work with community partners who play a leading role in ensuring they remain safe, respectful, and well maintained over time.
What They Represent
Cenotaphs are memorials that honour individuals who have served or made sacrifices - often in military or public service - even when remains are not present. They are typically places of remembrance and ceremony.
Monuments are structures or installations created to commemorate people, events, cultural heritage, or significant moments in the community’s history. They may recognize:
- Veterans and military service
- Cultural or Indigenous heritage
- Community leaders and pioneers
- Historical events or milestones
- Contributions that have shaped Greater Sudbury
Together, cenotaphs and monuments tell the story of our community and reflect the values we choose to honour publicly.
Proposing a New Cenotaph or Monument
Requests for new cenotaphs and monuments on City-owned property are supported through the City’s Community-Led Projects process. These projects are initiated and led by community groups, with the City providing guidance to ensure they meet municipal standards for safety, accessibility, and long-term care.
Before moving forward, please note:
- City approval is required before fundraising or construction begins
- Projects must meet City requirements for design, safety, and accessibility
- Community groups lead the project, including planning, fundraising, and implementation
- A formal agreement will outline roles and maintenance responsibilities
