GOVA Developing Mobility Hubs to Support Future Growth of Transit Services in Greater Sudbury

Apr 4, 2023

Residents are invited to share feedback on future GOVA Transit Mobility Hubs at upcoming open houses and through an online survey. The City of Greater Sudbury is working on a Transit Hub Feasibility Study to develop new Transit Mobility Hubs in the Downtown, South End and New Sudbury areas of Greater Sudbury.

Transit Mobility Hubs are major transit stations where different modes of transportation, such as walking, cycling and public transit, come together seamlessly. These hubs connect residents to amenities, like work, recreation, shopping malls and restaurants.

Main objectives of the project:

•    Support the future growth and success of GOVA Transit
•    Build on the success of the Transit Action Plan (https://www.greatersudbury.ca/city-hall/reports-studies-policies-and-plans/pdfs/transit-action-plan-final-report-2019/)
•    Create new destinations that are vibrant, safe and accessible public spaces
•    Connect the community using various modes of transportation
•    Build a sustainable, climate-resilient community

The Transit Hub Feasibility Study is seeking input from the community on the new Transit Mobility Hubs. An open house will be held at each of the existing transit hubs to provide an overview of the project and get the public’s feedback on preferred amenities for the new hubs, potential alternate locations and the overall GOVA Transit system.

The City will meet with key stakeholders to get their input on the project as well. The Transit Hub Feasibility Study will evaluate and develop the preferred Transit Mobility Hub locations based on stakeholders’ and the community’s feedback. Location recommendations will be presented to City Council for consideration in summer 2023.

Background:

Following a comprehensive review of the current public transit system, the Greater Sudbury Transit Action Plan (TAP) was approved by City Council in February 2019. The City implemented several improvements to support a more user-friendly transit system, including new routes and schedules with consideration for further improvements to the Transit Mobility Hubs.

GOVA Transit wants to lay the foundation for even more service improvements, the future transition to electric vehicles and improved amenities. The TAP recommended exploring other locations for the Downtown, New Sudbury and South End Transit Mobility Hubs.

The goal of this study is to identify and plan for new Transit Mobility Hub locations that will improve passenger safety and security, accessibility, the transit system’s ease of use, connections to major destinations and our city’s livability to support the future growth and success of GOVA Transit.

Through a Transfer Payment Agreement for the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP): Public Transit Stream, the Federal and Provincial Governments will support the City of Greater Sudbury with funds to carry out public infrastructure projects, including this initiative. The ministry-approved budget for this project, divided across Federal, Provincial and Municipal funding, is approximately $27,156,250.
