Friday, August 1, 2014

The City of Greater Sudbury will launch a new parking payment system at its underground municipal and provincial parking lot at Tom Davies Square on August 18, 2014.

The new parking system will allow citizens more payment options and an easier payment system than ever before.  Motorists will be able to pay for parking at “PayStations” located both on the municipal and provincial side of the parking lot before exiting. Previously, motorists were only able to pay cash for parking when exiting the lot; with the new system, credit and debit cards will both be accepted at PayStations, as well as cash.

“We are excited to be able to offer this new, streamlined service for customers of City Hall,” said Paul Baskcomb, Acting General Manager of Growth and Development for the City of Greater Sudbury. “With the new automated system, we are using technology to enhance convenience for citizens, by providing more payment options and ultimately keeping traffic flowing more effectively.”

Paris Street entrance, which was previously reserved for monthly pass holders, will be opened up to all motorists using the parking garage starting August 5. Starting August 18, customers will be able to enter either at Paris Street or Minto Street, where they will receive a ticket with the simple push of a button. Once they have returned to the parking garage, but before returning to their vehicle, customers will pay at one of the two available PayStations. Once their ticket has been paid, drivers will scan their receipt at the exit gate, which will lift automatically.

The garage will continue to be available for special events, at the regular rate of $3. Council nights will continue to have free parking for those wishing to attend. There are no parking fee changes attached to the automation system.

While the new system is being installed and tested, users of the parking garage are asked to note the following schedule:

August 5 to 18:
Minto Street entrance closed to public
Paris Street entrance opens for public parking
Payments at PayStations begin. Cash only for the first week

August 18:
Minto Street entrance opens
