For Immediate Release
Wednesday, January 11, 2017

City Council has approved a commitment required for the Canada Summer Games bid process, and showed further support for hosting the 2021 Games in Greater Sudbury.

This formal commitment is required according to the Canada Games Council’s bid procedures and hosting standards, and includes City Council’s pledge of financial and in-kind contributions, including a minimum of $3 million in capital funding from the municipality, which will leverage an additional $6 million in federal and provincial dollars.

“The potential of hosting the 2021 Canada Summer Games is a fantastic opportunity for Greater Sudbury, which would provide significant long-term economic and community benefits for our community,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger.  “I would like to thank staff, the Bid Committee and community partners who have worked so hard and have come together to further our priority of Growth and Economic Development as outlined in our Strategic Plan, Greater Together.”

Following a technical Phase 1 submission, Greater Sudbury was approved for the short list of bidders by the Canada Games Council’s Technical Review Committee in September 2016, based on their comprehensive site review in August. The Committee deemed that Greater Sudbury met the criteria for accommodations capacity, space and sport venues required to host the Games.

With the commitment of City Council now secured, the bid process will move forward with the full Bid Proposal package submitted to the Canada Games Council by January 31st, 2017. This will be followed by an official community visit by the Canada Games Council’s Bid Evaluation Committee on Monday, February 27th.  A community event is being planned for that day to welcome the Evaluators and give Greater Sudbury residents an opportunity to demonstrate their support and enthusiasm for the Games.

The announcement and awarding of the successful Host City is expected from the Canada Games Council and the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture & Sport on March 30, 2017.
