Why it’s dangerous

Exposure to the sap of Giant Hogweed causes sensitivity to light, which can result in serious skin burns and blisters. If it comes into contact with the eye, it can cause temporary or permanent blindness.

If you are exposed:

  • Wash the affected area immediately.
  • Keep the affected area out of the sun.
  • See a doctor if you have a reaction.

Removal of Giant Hogweed

It is your responsibility to remove giant hogweed found on your property. The City will remove plants on or near municipal facilities.

Do not compost giant hogweed or put out for curbside garbage removal. Hogweed will not be collected as part of the City waste collection services. If you have questions, please call 311.

Sightings of Giant Hogweed

If you see a plant you think is Giant Hogweed, call the City at 311. All calls are logged, and each reported sighting is investigated by City staff. Giant Hogweed located on or near municipal facilities is treated by a licensed contractor. Confirmed Giant Hogweed located on private property is reported to the property owners for their immediate action.
