Landfill Diversion Areas

  • There are some items you can bring to your local landfill that can be diverted and recycled.
  • When you bring these items to the landfill, you must place them in the appropriate landfill diversion area.
  • Before your trip, sort waste items and learn which items have fees and which are free of charge.

  • Items that can be reused should be placed in the proper diversion area of the landfill or transfer station. These include:

Appliances

  • Refrigerators, ovens, stoves, washers, dryers, dishwashers, freezers, air conditioning units, microwave ovens, hot water tanks. No need to remove the chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) from the freon containing appliances before delivery.

Blue Box recyclables

  • Check our Waste Wise tool to see if items are considered blue box recyclables.

Concrete and brick 

  • Pieces must be no greater than 1.2 m and free from metals or other materials.

Electronics

  • Televisions and monitors.
  • Telephones and cellular handheld devices.
  • Fax and answering machines.
  • Desktop computers, laptops, netbooks, notebooks and tablets.
  • Keyboards, mice, cables and internal computer components.
  • Printers, scanners, drivers and modems.
  • Audio recorders, tape/radio players, digital media (MP3) players and digital video cameras.
  • VCRs, DVD and CD players, speakers, amplifiers, receivers and data projectors.
  • Floor-standing photocopiers/printers/faxes.

Leaf and yard trimmings 

  • Leaves, grass, twigs, branches, brush trimmings, plant materials, natural trees (no wider than 2 feet and no longer than 8 feet).
  • Do not mix them with sod, roots, stumps below ground level, gravel or soil.

Organic Material

  • Items must be placed in certified compostable bags or paper bags.
  • Food scraps: fruits and vegetables; meat and fish products; small amounts of cooled grease, fat and cooking oil; sauces and gravy; breads and grains; baked goods; pasta and rice; eggs and eggshells; nuts and shells; and coffee grounds/filters/tea bags. 
  • Non-recyclable paper products: paper cups, plates, tissues, napkins, sugar/flour/potato bags.

Scrap metal 

  • Recyclable ferrous and non-ferrous metallic materials such as sheet metal, siding, roofing, rebar, flashings, pipes, window frames, doors, furnaces, duct work, wire, cables, fencing, bicycle frames, auto body parts, machinery, garbage cans, metal furniture, tire rims.
  • Metal items with non-metal parts or with hazardous waste are not considered scrap metal.

Sod 

  • No soil or rocks. Place it in the sod composting area. 

Wood waste 

You will need to separate your wood waste between clean and non-treated wood waste and other wood waste and place in the appropriate area.

Clean and non-treated wood waste

  • Lumber, roots, stumps free from soil and rocks.
  • No pressure treated or painted wood pallets or lumber.

Other wood waste

  • Doors, cabinets, bookshelves, painted lumber, cupboards.
  • Wood waste treated with a chemical preservative such as railroad ties or utility poles and pressure-treated lumber does not qualify.

Reusable cloth items (donation bin)

  • Bedding (pillows, blankets), linens, clothing, footwear, hats, purses, belts. Check specific items in our Waste Wise tool.

Tires

  • Passenger tires, light truck tires 
  • Medium (commercial - not marked by "P" or "LT") truck tires.
  • Large truck tires (off-road tires > 700kg).
  • Off-road tires (off-road tires <700kg).
